In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, players have access to a wide variety of multiplayer game modes including Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, and the new Prisoner Capture. One of the most popular modes in the series is Hardcore, which has been in the series for years. This intense mode removes the HUD and increases damage across the board. But does this mode appear in the new Modern Warfare 2?

Here’s what you need to know about the Hardcore mode in Modern Warfare 2.

Does Modern Warfare 2 have a Hardcore mode?

When Modern Warfare 2 first launched, it didn’t have a Hardcode mode, much to the disappointment of fans. Instead, the game had a mode called Tier 1, which was basically a rudimentary version of Hardcore mode, with some missing features. For instance, there’s no HUD, whatsoever, no hitmarkers, and no killfeed, which made the mode hard to actually play in some cases. Thankfully, Activision finally did add Hardcore more at the start of 2023, replacing the Tier 1 mode from before.

What is Hardcore mode?

Hardcore mode decreases player health to 30 down from 100. It also removes most of the HUD, except for during a UAV and other rare instances. Killfeed and hitmakers are enabled during Hardcore mode. In addition, friendly fire is enabled in this mode.

This results in a blisteringly fast-paced flow that isn’t for the faint of heart. You’ll need to be careful not to accidentally eliminate your teammates — whether it’s with bullets, explosives, or killstreaks. The nice thing about Hardcore is that most weapons work well since player health is so low. You can get one-hit kills with many weapons in the game, making it much more fast-paced than Core modes.

In addition, you’ll need to have heightened map awareness to effectively navigate your surroundings. With that in mind, it’s best to spend some time with the game before jumping into Hardcore so you’ll have better map knowledge.

Typically, there will be a playlist with various modes under the Hardcore umbrella, such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Kill Confirmed. The full list of game modes under the Hardcore category is as follows:

  • Team Deathmatch
  • Domination
  • Search and Destroy
  • Hardpoint
  • Headquarters
  • Kill Confirmed
  • Free for All
  • Control

Activision often likes to swap in various maps and modes, so be sure to check out the Hardcore playlist to see what’s currently available.
